Shock Propagation in a Granular Gas

Consider a collection of particles evolving in time through ballistic motion and inelastic collisions. What is the response of this system to the instantaneous input of energy in a localised region? This problem is the generalisation of the classic Taylor-Sedov problem of the spreading of energy following a nuclear explosion. In this talk, all the exponents for the above problem will be obtained using scaling arguments. The results will be compared with some recent experiments.
