Abstract : One of the most widely investigated topics in the field of condensed matter physics is the magnetism exhibited by Ce-based intermetallic compounds. In some Ce-based intermetallic compounds the 4f level lies in close proximity to the Fermi level, enhancing the interaction between the conduction electrons and the f electron leading to the Kondo effect which screens the 4f derived magnetic moment. In some cases, the conduction electron mediates the magnetic ordering via the indirect exchange or the so called Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. The competition between these two effects leads to various diverse ground states in the Cerium based intermetallic compounds. In this talk, I am going to present our results on two binary cerium based intermetallic compounds namely CeMg3 and CeGe. I will be describing in details about their single crystal growth and the anisotropic magnetic properties of these compounds.
