Abstract: In this talk we will get an overview of the fascinating field of dynamical systems. Put simply, it is the study of evolution of systems determined by certain rules, that is, how a space X changes under a transformation T. The subject of dynamical systems became widely popular after the 1970s due to the term "chaos" and a poetic turn of the phrase due to Lorenz- "the butterfly effect". This field requires knowledge of many other branches of mathematics, ranging from PDEs to geometry to topology to algebra, depending on the nature of the underlying space and the transformation, and has applications to other fields as well. We will talk about the connection of dynamical systems to some of these branches along with some celebrated theorems in ergodic theory, a subject which often goes hand in hand with dynamical systems. If time permits, we will also look at some recent trends in the field.
