Dr. Suresh Das, was formerly the Executive Vice President of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and before that the Director of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, CSIR, Trivandrum. Dr. Das obtained his Ph. D. in Chemistry in 1981 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. After gaining postdoctoral research experience at the Max Planck Institüt für Strahlenchemié, Mülheim, Germany, Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Indiana and the University of Houston, he joined as Head of the newly established Photochemistry Research Unit in 1989 at the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Trivandrum. There he was instrumental in establishing a leading group and state of the art facilities for conducting research on basic and applied aspects of photochemistry. He has been a Visiting Scientist at the Max Plank Institüt für Biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen, Germany, Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, USA and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Tsukuba, Japan. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore. He was also a founding Council Member of the Asian and Oceanian Photochemical Society. His research Interests are in the areas of photoresponsive liquid crystals, near infrared squaraine based dyes, organic solid-state luminescent materials and self-assembly.
